The Goucher women's swim team's successes are always obscured by the giants of the CAC: Catholic and Mary Washington. Those two teams define 'perennial contenders' in this area. This year was no different - Goucher posted four wins, Catholic and Mary Washington seven, each topping the Gophers. Still, hope remains that Goucher will someday soon join the CAC elite. Though the 4-8-1 record is far from perfect, this season was encouraging.

Coach Tom Till must smile when he thinks of the future - eight freshmen represented Goucher at the pool this year, pointing to continued improvement for the program. Still, seniors Alexandra Ranieri, Vicki Moorman, and 2004-05 two-time swimmer of the week Stephanie LaGue will be sorely missed.

The season got off to a promising start, with non-conference wins at von Borries Pool against Hood and Arcadia powering the Gophers to a 2-1 start.

Then, after a loss to Juniata, Goucher tied St. Mary's, an encouraging outing in which Goucher's winning 400-medley relay featured junior Carlyn Miller and three freshmen. This trend would continue, as freshmen made an impact during a win against Notre Dame in early December that returned Goucher to .500.

The Gophers then struggled through a four-meet losing streak. The bright spot was a near-ambush of Catholic, a 108-92 defeat at von Borries where LaGue won three events and set a pool record in the 200 backstroke.

The future seems bright for the Gophers, who can look forward to the CAC championships February 18-20 in St. Mary's City as a springboard to a season next year that builds on this one.
