The Goucher men's swim team barely has enough for 3-on-3 half-court action, while most of their Capital Athletic Conference opponents could field a football team.
Ask them if they care. At 4-7 heading into the CAC championships at St. Mary's City February 18-20, the sextet has accomplished a great deal.

With strong, consistent performances from veterans like senior Jon Claus (a CAC swimmer of the week back in November) and major contributions from freshman Mac McDonald, the Gophers cruised to 3-1.

They then struggled through five losing meets until an 84-71 win Jan. 29 against Gallaudet at home in von Borries Pool.

Coach Tom Till watched his six suffer losses to CAC leaders York and Catholic, but the team stands at sixth in the conference after its season-ending loss to Mary Washington.

The CAC championship provides an opportunity for departing senior Claus to wrap up an impressive season and career by possibly swimming his way to some hardware.

Throughout the season, the Baltimore native has won the 50 freestyle, 100 free, 100 breaststroke, 200 breast, 200 individual medley, and the 200 free.

McDonald, sophomore Wells Holbrook, juniors Brandon Arber and Charles Nyasae, and senior Michael Yosevitz all won events this year, proving that what Goucher may have lacked in depth, they made up for in across-the-board talent and determination.

This season is something to be proud of; hopefully, the CAC championships will only build on the year men's swimming had.
