Those who walk out of class craving sustenance will no longer have to walk all the way to Pearlstone, let alone Stimson.

For that matter, students who have classes around lunchtime may be able to consolidate the time they spend out of their rooms, especially if their professors have lax eating-in-class policies.

Starting around March 1st, pending arrival and installation, food will be available in the lobby of Van Meter.

Facilities Management Services will install "The Van," a coffee kiosk that will offer snacks, baked goods, cold drinks, salads, and a "small variety" of sandwiches, as well as Fair Trade coffee and organic teas.

"A bagged/boxed lunch will be offered on the meal plan," said Bon Appetit General Manager Norman Zwagil. "Flex dollars, gopher bucks and cash will be taken for other items."

The hours of operation are not yet certain, but Zwagil said that they will be determined based on when the cart is busy.

Although some have referred to the new addition as a lunch cart, Zwagil explained, "It is not a lunch cart and has never been described as such. It is a coffee kiosk that will have some grab 'n' go items that could be used for lunch, or dinner for that matter." The food sold at the cart will not be prepared on site.

Goucher has considered the idea of such a facility before.

According to Zwagil, "The decision was made at a campus discussion focusing on food service. It was a collective decision involving the President, Finance, Bon Appetit, SAC representatives, and other college community members."

Jennifer McCarty '05 expressed support for the idea. "As a commuter, I think it will be very helpful to have food available in the academic area so I don't have to go to Pearlstone to get it, especially since, as an education major, I have most of my classes in Van Meter. Now, if they could just move the mailboxes to Van Meter..."

"I think it's a really good idea," said Jeannette Adams '05, a computer science major. "A lot of students don't have time to go to Pearlstone between classes. Since I'm a science major, most of my classes are in Hoffberger, so it doesn't make that much of a difference for me. But maybe if it works and people like it, maybe they'll put one in Hoffberger."

At the end of last semester, SGA ran a contest asking students to submit names for the cart. "Having run the contest, I can tell you we received over 200 name suggestions from about 90 students," said Josh Stober, Student Government Association President. "I don't believe anyone came up with the name 'the van.' SGA selected three names which were submitted to the college, who were not comfortable with any of them."

According to Jim Segedy '07, the names SGA selected were, in order of popularity, "The Van Meter Highway Rest Stop," "New Cart," and "Brew You."

Stober added, "There was a lot of discussion about different names that SGA had come up with and other names that some of us involved in the process had individually thought up, but in the end, The Van was the name we could all agree on. For me, it works because it maintains the tradition of naming our dining areas after the building they are in."
