Construction continues on the new dormitory across from Heubeck Hall.

Although many Goucher students have walked bleary-eyed into class after struggling to get a decent night's rest due to the banging and clanging of the construction, the end to one of Goucher's major construction project is in sight.

Goucher's newest residence hall will be ready for students to live in by the beginning of fall 2005.

"Our plans for this residence hall are right on schedule," said Harold Tinsley, director of Facility Management Services (FMS), "We only lost one to two weeks because of the snow, but we are making up for it."

In a recent meeting, FMS met with their contractor, Whiting-Turner Construction Company, to discuss the latest progress of the new residence hall.

All of the materials needed to finish construction on the residence hall have been ordered and the delivery dates have been set. The steel structure was completed as of the beginning of winter break.

During the break, cinder block walls were put into place. The construction workers will soon finish erecting a roof, putting in metal studs to separate the dorms, and installing sprinklers.

Workers are installing heating and air conditioning units, and putting in the beginning structures for elevators.

After completing these tasks, dry wall and the exterior fieldstone, traditional to Goucher's buildings, will be put into place.

In the next few weeks, more work inside the residence hall, such as electrical wiring and window installation, will be completed. In the meantime, plastic covering has been placed over the window openings to keep out any rain or snow.

The residence hall under the Whiting-Turner Construction Company will house approximately 189 students, with handicapped accessibility and accommodations for students who need to additional help. The cost of the new residence hall is approximately nineteen million dollars.

Another large project that FMS will have under contract soon is the building of the Athenaeum.

In order to make more room for the Athenaeum, the new addition to the campus loop was built, and the south and north parking lots were added.
