After 30 years of bringing warmth, laughter and sheer entertainment to families across America, Johnny Carson bid a final "heartfelt goodnight" to families across America that night.
For those for whom Carson was a part of the nightly rituals, Jan. 23, the day he died of emphysema, marked the end of an era.
Though we may be too young to remember Carson (even though he did appear on "The Simpsons" once), the late night television pioneer greatly influenced many of our favorite late night hosts, including Jay Leno, the current host of The Tonight Show, David Letterman who is best known for his silly, mindless jokes (apparently Carson sent jokes to him until his death), Conan O'Brien and his silly skits, and Jon Stewart's infamous political wise cracks.
All say that Carson influenced their comedic trademarks, which means we all have had a little of Johnny in our lives as well.
During the time when Carson reigned as host of The Tonight Show, the show was known as a pit stop for numerous celebs. It is said that just an appearance on the show was a standout point on the résumé of any entertainer in Hollywood.
Carson used the show to showcase comedians such as Joan Rivers, Bill Cosby, Steve Martin Robin Williams, and even Jerry Seinfeld and Ellen DeGeneres.
He was even known to launch the careers of music artists, namely Barbara Streisand. His longtime friend and sidekick Ed McMahon seemed to make an understatement in stating that "Everything that Johnny touches turns to gold."
NBC can also attest to that, since Carson brought in 17% of NBC's revenue. But that won't be the reason why the people who worked with Carson and the people who enjoyed him for so many years will feel the loss of this legendary television treasure so deeply.
It's simply because the two little words "Heeeeeere's Johnny!" will no longer bring laughter, warmth and a cozy late night enjoying some good old, innocent humor.
Now is the time when everyone else has to bid a "heartfelt goodnight to you too, Johnny."
