Goucher men's soccer is a program on the rise, but it still could not best its rival, Salisbury. On October 6, Salisbury came to Beldon Field with first place in the Capital Athletic Conference on the line and left with a hard-earned 3-2 victory over our Gophers. The Sea Gulls entered the game undefeated, at 8-0-1, and left undefeated, despite a valiant effort on Goucher's part.
The last eight games between Salisbury and Goucher ended with the same score showing on the Gophers' side of the scoreboard: 0. This time, Goucher took a 2-1 lead at halftime, through the footwork and goals of Eddie Emokpae '08 and Kevin Bartruff '06. However, the Sea Gulls stormed back with two early second-half goals and improved defense the rest of the way.
Though losing to Salisbury, now the top-ranked team in the South Region of NCAA Division III ranking, was disheartening, the team has reason to be excited.
The influx of talent from this year's freshman class points to a bright future for the rest of the season and beyond. At 6-5 (2-1 CAC), Goucher has the potential to set up a rematch with Salisbury. There are six games left in the season, all in conference, including an October 27th Beldon Field showdown with York, which shares first place with Salisbury.
The Gophers have begun to exercise their potential and as the year continues, they should further mature as a team. If the October 6 game was any indication, Goucher will be a force to reckon with in the conference. In the finals, the men's soccer team hopes to face Salisbury again.
