Dr. Nelly Lahoud, the newest addition to the political science department, joined the Goucher Community this year as an assistant professor, and brought with her an expertise in Islamic Studies.

So far, Lahoud loves Goucher; she has found faculty, staff and students to be supportive, and describes her students as "sufficiently bright and responsive."

Lahoud was born in Beirut, Lebanon and has resided in Australia for the past ten years. She earned a BA from Monash University in politics and religion and theology and a Ph.D from Australian National University. She completed a year of post-doctoral research at St. John's College, University of Cambridge.

Since coming to the United States, Lahoud has been particularly impressed by Americans' commitment to civic duty, especially how they take their sense of citizenship very seriously by being politically engaged.

As far as the political battle between the divides of the American people, she does, not side with the Republicans or the Democrats, simply stating, "I don't see much substance on either side."

This semester, Lahoud is teaching "Understanding Politics, Classic Political Thought," and "Islamic Political Thought."

In other semesters, she will also be introducing "Modern and Contemporary Political Thought," among many other courses aimed towards critical analysis of politics and international relations.

Lahoud recently submitted some manuscripts on Islamic tradition for publication; she has been awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship in Islamic Studies at the Library of Congress to continue to pursue further research in the summer.

Lahoud holds the long-term goal of increasing interest in the Islamic tradition and Goucher; she hopes to develop a major in Islamic studies in the future.
