At noon on Sunday, April 25th, the National Mall In Washington, D.C. will fill up with women wearing "Radical Raspberry" T-shirts proclaiming the words "Feminist Majority." Some of those women will be from Goucher.
The March for Women's Lives aims to protest the possibility that the Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that made abortion legal in the United States. According to the web site for the march, "Roe still hangs by a slim 5-4 majority on the US Supreme Court. The addition of even one more anti-choice Justice could result in either overturning Roe v. Wade or so burdening this right that many women will effectively be forced to the back alleys. At the state level, restriction after restriction is being passed to limit access to family planning and abortion, especially for poor women and young women."
Seven organizations are sponsoring the march while other groups are contributing as co-sponsors. The major sponsoring groups include American Civil Liberties Union, Black Women's Health Imperative, Feminist Majority, NARAL Pro-Choice America, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, National Organization for Women, and Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
Fliers for the march provide information explaining its cause. A few of these include:
"Since 1995 over 355 pieces of anti-choice legislation have been passed at the state level. These restrictions disproportionately affect young women, low-income women, and women of color.
"Over 50% of U.S. dollars for family planning are currently going to abstinence only programs.
"The United Nations reports that over 70,000 women die each year due to complications of unsafe abortion procedures. All of these deaths are preventable.
"The Goucher College Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance has formed a Goucher delegation that will be attending the March together," says Amy Shevlin '04, President of Goucher's chapter of the Feminist Majority League Association (FMLA). "We will represent Goucher College at the March and we have a very large group of people coming with us. The buses will be leaving Goucher at 8:00am on April 25th. There are only a few tickets left but if you would like to buy one, they are $8.00 each. Please send cash to Amy Shevlin through Campus Mail with a piece of paper indicating your name, address, phone number, email address, and emergency contact information. After I have received your info and payment, I will send you your ticket through campus mail."
