Befriend Those Who Lend: National Library Week

Every year, the American Library Association sponsors "National Library Week" at Goucher College. This year, National Library Week is April 19th through the 25th.
Access Services librarian Susan Ezell comments, "The event illustrates the particularly unique services provided by the library. Anyone can walk in, sit and read quietly, research, and study for free. The library is in a way a personal sanctuary. We, as librarians, love to celebrate that."
Each day coffee and doughnuts will be provided at the front desk on a first-come-first-served basis. There will also be chess, a Mad Hatter Tea Party, a graffiti contest, and a forum in which people may read from their favorite work for up to five minutes (a soap box will be provided). Additionally, there is a Maurice Sendak contest, in which students must correctly match the children's author's illustrations to his work to win prizes.
Ezell emphasizes that this year's National Library Week will be especially fun due to the creativity provided by the student planning committee, "a group of students whose most prominent movers and shakers were Kelsey Holt '04 and Amy Bartlow '04."
Bartlow, the cover girl for National Library Week, says she was pleasantly surprised when she saw her picture on the flier for the event. Ezell explains, "Amy didn't know I was going to use this photo from last year. I thought it would be particularly appropriate, given the surprise photo of my distinguished colleague and fellow revolutionary Tom Minnema on the cover on The Undecim."
An added bonus during the week is that late fees will be pardoned for those who return overdue books in good condition. The message: there is no excuse not to take advantage of Goucher's library, especially during National Library Week. Ezell concludes, "Thanks for remembering your library."
