The Earthworks Club is working diligently to achieve a challenging yet feasible goal: to popularize and ultimately institutionalize the recycling program on campus.

For the past few academic years, Earthworks has put all attainable efforts into developing the recycling program, which was initiated by a group of students in 1989.

Over the years, members continued to charge through the rough spots; 1997 marked a turning point for the program. That year, Betsy Cohn's course "Global Civic Responsibility" (IIS 210) started conducting an environmental audit of the campus as course work. The project provided Earthworks with a significant amount of support and research, and is how the program regained its strength.

Earthworks soon established a tier of goals, the most crucial being the creation of a sustainable recycling program that: 1) was integrated into the school's system, (making it not just Earthworks' responsibility) and 2) withstood the constant matriculation and graduation of students.

Earthworks has continued to seek outside help, hoping to integrate the recycling system into the administration and the President's "Strategic Plan."

Thus far, the club has spent a total of $13,600 on two large shipments of bins and is currently searching for outside funding to purchase the third and final shipment. The club is requesting help from SGA, President Ungar, state and outside grants, the Alumnae/i of Goucher College, and the Strategic Fund.

Earthworks recently hosted Nicholas Nicolet, a Public Interest Research Group representative from National Offices in D.C., to speak with and assist Earthworks and other members of the Goucher community on campus.

During the lecture, three hours were spent to establish Earthworks' own "strategic plan." Nicolet assisted Earthworks in establishing management and planning skills for the future. The club now has an even stronger outline as to how to make the recycling program more successful.

Earthworks invites the student body, staff, and administration to join in making Goucher and Mother Earth a finer home for all. The club hopes that as a result of the initiatives taking place, the Goucher community, not just the environmental club, will soon earn a reputation for its green habits. Be on the lookout for more special events, and do your part to make a difference.

In honor of the occasion, Earthworks will hold a trash and recyclables-collecting contest, beginning at 11:30 in the Pearlstone Atrium.

Trash collecting times are at 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Whoever collects the most trash and recyclable items for each time slot will receive super prizes! Come enrich your earthy experience by beautifying the campus, experiencing a special reading interpretation by OCT, and grabbing some snacks!
