After working hard practicing and playing three matches on a fun, exciting Spring Break trip to Phoenix, Arizona, the women's tennis team came out on the weekend of March 27 and 28 and won their first (non-exhibition) match of the season. On Saturday, the 27th, the Lady Gophers defeated Waynesburg 8-1, sweeping all three doubles matches and five out of six singles matches.
At number one doubles, Katie Grosch '04 and Jessie McClean '04 cleaned up 8-2. At number two, Elyse Kotzker '07 and Steph Austin '07 won 8-5. Megan Resser '06 and visiting French student Tiphaine Franc defeated their opponents 8-6 in the No. 3 doubles match.
In singles play, No. 1 McClean defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-0; No. 2 Grosch won 6-3, 6-2; No. 3 Kotzker came from behind to win 5-7, 6-2, (10-5 in a super tie-breaker); No. 4 Austin lost 5-7, 0-6; No. 5 Resser won 6-1, 1-6, (10-6 in a super tie-breaker); and No. 6 Maud Breton, another visiting French student, won her match 6-3, 6-1.
The next day, Sunday the 28th, the Gophers played again but did not come out on top after a tough exhibition match versus the U.S. Naval Academy. The team did gain two points, however, with wins by Grosch and McClean at No. 1 doubles and Resser at No. 5 singles.
Conference play for the Gophers was supposed to begin with matches versus Catholic University on Wednesday, March 31 and York College on Thursday, April 1, but the rain prevailed and those matches have been rescheduled to Wednesday, April 7 and Thursday, April 15, respectively. The team will travel to Catholic and will host York. Other upcoming home matches include Villa Julie at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 8; St. Mary's at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 10; and College of Notre Dame at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14. The team will then finish up their season with a trip to CAC's at Salisbury University on April 16-18.
