On April 17, the Goucher Fencing Club will welcome other regional clubs to Goucher for an all-day tournament in the Old Gym.

The tournament will start with pools of no more than 6-8 participants. Players in each competition in the first round will play to five points. In the second round, partipants will play to 15 points, until one winner is chosen in each of three types of fencing: foil, epee, and sabre.

The free event is open to spectators - registration starts at 10 am, and fencing will begin at 11:30.

Club President Becky Wilson '05 has invited fencing clubs at St Marys College, UMBC, UM College Park, CCBC - Catonsville, and Johns Hopkins, in addition to two area fencing clubs, to compete in the Fencing Tournament. So far, only St Marys has secured a place, but Wilson expects the other fencing clubs to show up the morning of the event.

Wilson says, "Recently College Park Fencing Club has expressed interest in developing an inter-collegiate league. This is a testing ground for that." An inter-collegiate league would bring a real season, ranking, and league meets to the Fencing Club.

The last Fencing event held at Goucher was the 2001 area sectional for the United States Fencing Association (USFA) finals. Wilson also says the Fencing Club will still continue to host open tournaments if this event is successful.

The Goucher Fencing Club has been around since when Goucher was a women's college. The club has 12-13 members who attend regular meetings three times a week, in which they have informal fencing matches. Club meetings are open to anyone.
